Do you want to be happy? Of course you do! Happiness is the one common goal we all share.
But frustratingly, when it comes to our happiness, we all come up against the same obstacles – the chief obstacle being ourselves.
Whether we doubt our abilities, hold onto limiting beliefs or keep ourselves small out of fear; intentionally or unintentionally, we are all guilty of standing in the way of our happiness at some time or another.
The good news is – there are countless ways in which we can get out of our own way!
By learning to let go of certain limitations and by just embracing life, rather than hiding from it, we can all become the happier person that we long to be.
Take a look at the 10 following thoughts, ideas, and beliefs you need to let go of and to help you be happy.
There is no such thing as a ‘perfect’ life. Our lives are a journey and as with any journey, the road will never be totally straight and without its obstacles. Whilst no life is perfect, it is still 100% possible to create a life that is perfect for you.
It is as the saying goes – life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.
So throw that checklist for the ‘perfect’ life right out of the window! Let go of that fixed vision you have for a ‘perfect’ life and begin to make the most of what you have NOW.
The idea of perfection itself is a myth. So remember, life may not be perfect – but with the right attitude, it can feel damn close!
Do you find it hard to let go of your anger or resentment for others? If this has been you in the past, then you’ll know how feeling angry all of the time only serves to eat you up inside. Many of us hold onto our anger out of sheer stubbornness, or as a way to ‘punish’ those that have wronged us. However, the reality of the situation is that you are only punishing yourself.
We can all be guilty of judging others – silently or aloud. But why do we concern ourselves with the actions and choices of other people, especially when they have no impact on us? More often than not, the things we judge each other for are actually the things we dislike most about ourselves.
So the next time you go to judge another person, ask yourself – what am I seeing in them that I want to change about myself?
4. Negative Body-Image
Negative body image is a big problem for a lot of people in our society. But if you’re allowing negative body-image to hold you back in your own life, ask yourself – who’s definition of beauty am I buying into? Because no one person can define what is beautiful and what is not.
It is up to each and every one of us to discover what our own unique interpretation of beauty really is.
So don’t ever allow somebody else’s idea of beauty to impact your own. We are all unique and should stay that way! Always love exactly what and who you are.
5. The Idea That Success Must Come to YOU
Too many people grow up believing that success is something that should just fall into your lap. However, success – however you define it – needs to be sought out. You can’t just sit back and expect everything you want from life to come to you. You need to go out and make things happen!
One of the most effective ways to start getting more done is to start living in the presence of your death. This may sound morbid, but once you’re able to accept that life is short and death is imminent – for ALL of us – you suddenly start to get a lot more done. Not only that, but you concentrate on getting stuff done that actually means something to you.
Another thing that you absolutely must let go of – are your excuses. Excuses are something we all use to make us feel better when we are too afraid or too lazy to do something we KNOW will benefit us. Want to quit your job and start your own business? Need to go to the gym? Still waiting to tell somebody how you feel? Fewer excuses and more action!
7. Past Baggage
We all have baggage from our pasts. However, the reason it’s called baggage is because it’s so darn heavy. Dwelling in the past for too long will starts to weigh you down in the present, keeping you stuck and preventing you from looking ahead to your dreams.
So if you’re still holding onto baggage from your past, it’s time to let it go… Be thankful for the valuable life lessons you can take with you, and move forward.
8. Wealth is Happiness
For a lot of people, money is by far their biggest – if not sole – motivator.
Too many people live their lives in pursuit of money, believing that with money comes incredible happiness. However, it’s important to remember that money can’t buy you love, friends or fulfillment …it can buy you a lot of things, but it cannot buy you happiness. Happiness is something we have to find within ourselves; not in cars, homes, holidays or a bank balance.
9. Negative Thoughts
You are what you think. Your life…the reality that you live in…you should think of everything external to you as a perfect mirror image of what is going on within you. This is why it’s so important that you nurture positive thoughts and work to lose all of the negative ones.
Negativity is normal; you cannot prevent a single negative thought from ever crossing your mind. That would be a fruitless and somewhat exhausting battle. However, what you should do is give negativity less of your time. When you feel as though your train of thought is taking a negative turn for the worse, accept it, listen to what these thoughts have to say – and then let them go. It is when people dwell on their negativity that the problems begin. So retrain your mind to always look for the positives. Rather than dwell on what’s going wrong, dwell on what’s going right for a change.
10. The Approval of Others
Are you someone that lives their life constantly conscious of what other people think about you? Who cares what other people think? If your choices make YOU happy, then what else is there to worry about?
When you live to constantly meet the standards and seek the approval of those around you, you no longer live a life that is authentic to you. And the key to a happy life is authenticity.
So forget what others think – what do you think? Follow your own bliss and the happy times will simply roll in.
